Masking is a powerful way to infuse hydration and nourishment into the skin. At Mozzafiato, we carry the very best in Italian skin care including a curated selection of masks for every skin type. Perhaps the most legendary mask of all is the recently restocked Borghese Fango Mud Mask. We took this occasion to interview Aleksandra Wasowska, Borghese’s ultimate expert in the famous mud, to give us her insider tips and tricks for how to maximize the benefits of this Italian tradition.
MF: Borghese is famous for its mud masks and women have sworn by them for decades. Tell us about the origins of the mud and what makes it such a special and powerful product.
AW: We just celebrated 35 years of Fango and 20 million sold! A little Borghese fun fact; Fango means Mud in Italian. Our founder, Princess Marcella Borghese, was inspired by Italian Tuscan Spa Retreats known for their volcanic terrain and mineral rich thermal springs. In 1985, Borghese launched our Iconic Fango Mud Mask. Our mud is a combination of Bentonite and Kaolin clay, minerals, extracts and botanicals. Clay helps to deeply purify, exfoliate, and reduce pore size, while the minerals, extracts and botanicals nourish the skin. After 2-5 minutes, your skin looks refreshed, smooth, toned, and radiant.
What makes it special? For the skin to accept botanical extracts, major cellular activity is required. Our plant extracts are treated with natural enzymes. The Result: It allows for quick and easy absorption into skin and better performance – your skin no longer needs to do the work!
MF: I know there are certain tricks to using the mud masks most effectively. Can you share with us how you, as the ultimate expert, use the mask?
AW: Masking is my favorite skin care ritual because the results are instant. The skin will look refreshed and healthy when we mask regularly, so I schedule my masking treatment once a week as part of my self-care routine.
When applying our mud mask, I layer it on thick, like I am icing a cake. I keep the mask on for 2-5 minutes only, without letting it dry. This allows for all the goodness to sink into the skin without drying it. I then remove the mask with warm water to keep my pores tight – never use hot water.
I also love to multi-mask. I use Advanced Fango Active Mud on my t-zone to detox and remove impurities and because my cheeks tend to get very dry, I apply Advanced Fango Delicato Mud Mask for hydration (and it also gently purifies). Our Fango Mud Masks are made for the face and body: I use it on my neck, decolletage, hands and elbows as well. I even use it on my feet to soften my skin. Using Fango regularly helps my other treatments like serums and moisturizes work at their optimum, and it also targets dryness and signs of premature aging.
MF: This month Borghese is releasing its large glass jar of the Advanced Fango Active Mud Mask, what can you tell us about this product?
AW: Our iconic 7.5 oz glass jar is back! As mentioned, our Advanced Fango Active mud is made for the face and body and this jar allows for head-to-toe treatment!
Infused with Siberian Ginseng Root, Chaga Mushroom, Sweet Almond Oil and Avocado Oil, this mud helps clarify, purify, and enhance skin elasticity. It also helps to tighten and tone texture while fighting environmental pollution. There are so many incredible benefits to this mud, and it is free of Parabens, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth (SLES), Phthalates and talc. And the best part, it’s only $50!
MF: Of course, Borghese produces gorgeous masks in many other forms in addition to the mud. What are your other favorites? Personally, I’m loving the eye sheet masks right now as they are incredibly soothing and calming to my eyes after being so strained by screen time.
AW: I love the Restorative Eye Sheet Masks! I keep them in the fridge to add that extra cooling boost. The best part about these masks is you can literally use them anytime, anywhere!
My other absolute favorite is the Borghese Radiante Revitalize and Firm Mask. This mask is a luminous ray of Tuscan sunshine in a jar. Beauty Hack: apply this mask after one of our Fango Mud Masks; after removing the mud mask, apply an even layer the Radiante Revitalize and Firm Mask and leave it on for 8-10 minutes. End result: leaves skin healthy and luminous like you just left the spa!
Lastly, let us not forget our hands, because these days frequent washing and sanitizing is making our hands extra dry. Our Deep Hydration Hand Sheet Mask imparts rich moisture on rough, dry skin AND it is also an age-defying formula that helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The gloves have a soft inner lining and are touchscreen friendly, so you can work or scroll guilt free (for at least 15-20 mins).
Just like Princess Marcella Borghese, we believe that everyone should be able to get the royal benefits of a spa treatment in the comfort of their own home. And it is easy to create the ultimate luxury spa experience with these Borghese treatments. So, apply, lounge, and let the masks work their magic!
